US Ends Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopians

Washington, December 12, 2025 — The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopian nationals, citing improved conditions in Ethiopia that it says no longer pose a serious threat to returning citizens.

Under the decision, Ethiopian nationals currently living in the United States without another form of legal status will be given a 60-day period to voluntarily depart the country.

DHS warned that starting February 13, 2026, any Ethiopian national remaining in the US without lawful status may be subject to arrest and deportation.

The department is encouraging individuals who choose voluntary departure to use the CBP Home mobile application, which offers:

A government-paid airline ticket

A $1,000 financial incentive

Potential eligibility for future lawful entry options

The announcement has raised serious concerns among Ethiopian communities across the United States, with immigration advocates expected to respond in the coming days.
