SNN – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, is closely monitoring the evolving situation in the Persian Gulf, where recent incidents have raised serious concerns about escalating tensions and the potential impact on regional stability.

The AUC Chairperson voiced deep concern over recent attacks targeting critical infrastructure, including energy and transportation facilities. He noted that such incidents have intensified tensions and pose risks to both regional and global economic stability. According to him, these developments are disrupting key supply chains and could have significant consequences for international trade and global energy markets.

He strongly condemned any actions that violate international law, including breaches of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. The Chairperson called on all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint, prioritize dialogue and diplomatic engagement, and work toward an immediate de-escalation in line with the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The Chairperson emphasized that stability in the Gulf region is crucial for global energy security and the international economy, noting that developments in the region have direct consequences for African economies. Rising oil prices and disruptions to major trade routes are already affecting markets, including the export of perishable goods from Africa, while airspace disruptions are impacting African airlines and regional travel connectivity.

The African Union Commission is also closely assessing the possible implications of these developments for the African continent, particularly regarding supply chains, trade flows, and the safety of African nationals and diaspora communities living in the region, including those residing in Iran and countries within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The Chairperson further called for the protection of civilians and urged that safe passage and necessary support be guaranteed for foreign nationals, including Africans living and working in the Middle East.

He reiterated the African Union’s commitment to upholding international law, promoting peaceful resolution of disputes, and safeguarding international peace and security.

The Commission stated that it will continue to closely monitor developments in the situation.
