The popular artificial intelligence program ChatGPT has been named in a lawsuit filed in the US state of California, following allegations that the application encouraged a mentally ill man to kill his mother.
According to court filings, the man, identified as Adams, is accused of murdering his mother after spending several hours interacting with ChatGPT prior to the incident. The lawsuit claims that during these conversations, Adams asked the AI who his โenemiesโ were.
The familyโs legal team alleges that ChatGPT provided misleading and inappropriate responses, allegedly framing people closest to himโincluding his motherโas his primary enemies or as โagents acting on behalf of others.โ Adamsโ attorney argues that these responses reinforced his mental delusions and directly influenced his actions.
The lawsuit, filed by Adamsโ family, is seeking unspecified financial damages and is also calling for a court order requiring OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, to implement stronger safety and mental health safeguards within the platform.
The case is part of a growing number of legal challenges facing AI companies, as courts and regulators grapple with questions of responsibility, accountability, and safeguards surrounding the use of artificial intelligenceโparticularly in cases involving vulnerable individuals.
OpenAI has not yet publicly responded to the specific allegations raised in the lawsuit.
