SNN – An American journalist has been kidnapped in Baghdad by a suspected Iran-backed armed group, according to U.S. officials, raising concerns over worsening security conditions in the region.
The journalist has been identified as Shelly Kittleson, a freelance reporter based in Rome who has covered conflicts across the Middle East.
The United States Department of State confirmed the abduction and said it is working with Iraqi authorities to secure her release as quickly as possible. Officials added that the journalist had previously been warned about security risks in Iraq.
Authorities in Iraq said security forces intercepted a vehicle linked to the kidnapping. One suspect was arrested after the vehicle overturned during an attempted escape, while efforts are ongoing to capture others involved and locate the missing journalist.
U.S. officials believe individuals connected to Kataib Hezbollah may be behind the abduction.
Media organizations and advocacy groups have condemned the incident. News outlet Al-Monitor, for which Kittleson has worked, said it was deeply concerned and called for her immediate and safe release. The International Women’s Media Foundation described her as an experienced and credible journalist.
The kidnapping comes at a time of heightened tensions in Iraq following recent conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Security conditions in Baghdad had improved in recent years, but incidents like this highlight ongoing risks, particularly from armed groups with regional ties.
The U.S. government has reiterated its advisory urging American citizens, including journalists, to avoid travel to Iraq due to increasing security threats.
