Russia and China Veto UN Plan to Force Open Strait of Hormuz

SNN News – Russia and China have used their veto power at the United Nations Security Council to block a proposal aimed at authorizing the use of force to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The draft resolution reportedly called for international action to ensure free navigation through the vital waterway, which handles a significant portion of global oil shipments. The move comes amid escalating tensions in the region and disruptions to maritime traffic.

However, both Moscow and Beijing opposed the proposal, arguing that military intervention could further destabilize the region and worsen the ongoing conflict.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, with a large share of global oil and gas supplies passing through it daily.

Any disruption has immediate consequences for global energy markets and economic stability. The veto highlights deep divisions within the Security Council over how to respond to the crisis, with Western countries pushing for stronger action while Russia and China favor diplomatic solutions.

Analysts say the decision could prolong uncertainty in global energy markets and complicate efforts to ensure safe shipping routes in the Gulf.
