Federal Forces Take Control of Baidoa as Southwest Leader Resigns

SNN – Baidoa witnessed a major political and security shift this week after Somali federal forces moved into the city, leading to the resignation of Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.

The takeover followed weeks of escalating tensions between the Federal Government of Somalia and the Southwest State leadership. The dispute intensified after Laftagareen’s controversial re-election, which was not recognized by federal authorities, deepening the political rift between the two sides.

Federal troops entered Baidoa and secured key government installations, effectively bringing the strategic city under central government control. Baidoa, which serves as the administrative capital of the Southwest State, is also a critical hub for humanitarian operations and regional governance.

Shortly after the military deployment, Laftagareen announced his resignation, marking a significant turning point in the crisis. His departure is widely seen as an attempt to ease tensions and prevent further escalation.

Despite earlier fears of clashes, the situation in the city has remained relatively calm, although tensions are still high. Reports indicate that some residents fled the area during the initial troop movement, while humanitarian activities were temporarily disrupted.

The developments highlight ongoing challenges in Somalia’s federal system, particularly disputes over elections, governance, and the balance of power between regional states and the central government.

Observers say the events in Baidoa could have broader implications for political stability in Somalia, especially as the country continues efforts to strengthen institutions and maintain security.
