Somalia Registers First National-Flagged Vessel Since State Collapse

SNN – The Federal Government of Somalia has announced the registration of its first vessel under the Somali flag since the collapse of the central government in 1991.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport confirmed that the vessel “Guney” (IMO 8230417) has been officially registered after completing all required legal and administrative procedures.

Officials described the move as a significant milestone in rebuilding Somalia’s maritime sector and restoring national authority over its waters.

“This marks an important step toward strengthening Somalia’s maritime governance and re-establishing its presence in international shipping,” the ministry said.

For decades, Somalia has lacked a fully functional ship registry due to prolonged instability and weak institutional capacity. The successful registration of the vessel signals progress in efforts to rebuild key state institutions and regulate maritime activities.

Authorities say the initiative is part of a broader plan to:

  • Develop Somalia’s maritime infrastructure
  • Enhance regulation of shipping activities
  • Increase revenue from the blue economy

The government also emphasized that restoring a national flag registry will help improve oversight, ensure compliance with international maritime standards, and boost investor confidence in Somalia’s shipping sector.

Analysts note that Somalia’s strategic location along major global shipping routes gives it significant potential in maritime trade, provided governance and security continue to improve.
