SNN – Two men have been charged with terrorism-related offences after authorities said they attempted to carry out a bomb attack outside the residence of the New York City mayor during a protest.
The suspects, 18-year-old Emir Balat and 19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi, are accused of trying to detonate explosive devices near Gracie Mansion, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani lives. Police said the attack took place on Saturday during an anti-Islam protest near the mayor’s residence.
According to investigators, the suspects allegedly planned an attack they hoped would be “even larger” than the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and injured hundreds. However, the explosives failed to detonate as intended and no injuries were reported.
New York police said the two men attempted to ignite two improvised explosive devices, while a third bomb was later discovered inside their vehicle. Video footage showed one of the suspects being arrested moments after lighting one of the devices.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said both suspects admitted they were inspired by the Islamic State (IS) group and had watched its propaganda videos online.
The two men now face multiple federal charges, including attempting to provide material support to IS and using a weapon of mass destruction.
Authorities said one of the suspects made statements praising the extremist group while being transported to the police station and allegedly said that if he had not carried out the attack, someone else eventually would.

Investigators also said the explosive devices were made using triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a highly volatile homemade explosive that has been used in several past terror attacks.
During their first court appearance, a federal judge ordered both suspects to remain in custody until their next hearing scheduled for April 8.
Mayor Mamdani said those responsible must be held accountable and stressed that New York City will continue efforts to prevent terrorism and protect residents.
Authorities also confirmed that the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force is involved in the investigation, reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses connected to the incident.
