GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines — Rescue teams in the southern Philippines continued searching through collapsed buildings on Tuesday as the death toll from a powerful earthquake climbed and thousands of residents remained displaced.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani province on the southern island of Mindanao, causing widespread destruction across several communities. Authorities said at least 37 people have been confirmed dead, hundreds have been injured, and several others remain missing as emergency workers race to locate survivors trapped beneath rubble.
Some of the worst damage was reported in General Santos City, a major commercial hub in southern Mindanao, where residential buildings, schools, hospitals, and public infrastructure suffered extensive damage. Rescue crews continued operations at collapsed structures where survivors were believed to be trapped.
Officials reported that more than 32,000 people have been displaced by the disaster, forcing thousands of families into temporary shelters and evacuation centers. Large sections of the region have also experienced power outages, water shortages, and disruptions to transportation services.
The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings across parts of the Philippines and neighboring countries, including Indonesia and Malaysia, although the alerts were later lifted after only moderate sea disturbances were recorded.
Hospitals in several affected areas were forced to move patients outdoors after buildings sustained structural damage. Medical personnel established temporary treatment facilities in tents as authorities worked to assess the safety of healthcare facilities.
Government agencies have also begun inspecting thousands of school buildings across the affected region before classes can resume. Several schools suffered partial collapses, prompting concerns about student safety amid continuing aftershocks.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, dozens of significant aftershocks have already been recorded since the main quake struck, including several strong tremors that complicated rescue efforts and increased fears of additional building collapses.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered emergency response agencies to mobilize relief operations and coordinate assistance for affected communities. International partners, including the United States, Japan, France, and New Zealand, have expressed support and offered assistance to Philippine authorities.
The disaster is one of the strongest earthquakes to strike the Philippines in decades and serves as another reminder of the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters. Located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, the Philippines experiences frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity due to its position on several major tectonic fault lines.
As rescue operations continue, families across Mindanao are anxiously awaiting news of missing relatives while authorities warn residents to remain alert for aftershocks in the coming days.
